    Promoting a Greener Hawaii

    If you’re interested in rolling up your sleeves and actually passing laws that promote a more sustainable and green future for Hawaii, please read on.

    On December 4th, the Sierra Club’s Capitol Watch is hosting a “Forces for Good” Symposium, a fast-paced and exciting half-day workshop focused on environmental issues important to Hawaii.

    The symposium will address agriculture and ways to increase our self-sufficiency, the move towards clean energy, ways to reduce our growing waste problem, and advocacy tips – how do we actually get good legislation passed?

    Confirmed speakers include, among others, Rick Barboza (Hui Ku Maoli Ola), Stuart Coleman (Surfrider Foundation), Representative Cynthia Thielen (District 50), former Senator Gary Hooser, and more.

    Aloha Members of the Environmental Caucus of the Democratic Party of Hawai’i,

    The legislative year is almost upon us, and it is time for our Caucus to get active. That being said, we have a number of announcements and invitations to pass on:

    On December 4, at 8:30 AM, the General Caucus is invited to attend a Sierra Club sponsored advocacy training session at the State Capital. The session lasts four-hours and should be extremely informative. Specific information will be posted on out new website as soon as we have full details.

    Speaking of websites, we are pleased to announce our new website URL, and invite you to visit and bookmark its homepage. You will find it at enviromentalcaucusofthedemocraticpartyofhawaii.wordpress.com.

    We also would like to announce two General Caucus meetings: The first on December 1, 2010, see our website calendar for time and location.

    At this meeting we will be reporting to the General Caucus regarding our activities over the past two months, as well as finalizing plans for the extended General Caucus meeting scheduled to follow on December 11.

    We are also still looking for someone to take over the Subcommittee chair position for Food Security and Sustainability.

    If you, or someone you know, is interest, please let us know and plan to attend.

    The second General caucus meeting is set for  December 11, 2010, again see our website calendar for time and location.

    This four-hour meeting will feature a panel discussion, reports from our three subcommittees, breakout sessions for member impute, as well as recommendations and votes on legislative initiatives.

    We are specifically looking for legislative solutions and not just a long list of Hawai’i’s problems, so we encourage you to come with potential solutions in mind.

    The December 11, 9am-1pm — proposed meeting agenda follows:

    a. Greetings and introductions

    b. Panel discussion with members of each task force.

    c. Break into subcommittees and discussion that subcommittees top priorities.

    d. Subcommittee recommendations with a decision on the top three legislative priorities in each task force.

    Finally, for those who really want to get actively involved, we have uploaded a “working document” based on Gov. Abercrombie’s environmental white pages. We invite you to check it out and help us with any recommendations.   • Schedule Changes

    Greetings Members,

    The Steering Committee has been in touch via phone and e-mail. Together we have decided that a schedule change is needed. You will find the details on our Calendar.

    We hope that all our members will take advantage of the Sierra Club sponsored event on Dec 4 at the State Capitol, which includes advocacy training.  We will post more information as it becomes available.

    We also hope that you can all join us at a December 11 extended General Caucus meeting, in which we hope to discuss and determine our upcoming legislative agenda. Your voice and vote is welcome.
